Scholarship Description: The project will be based on biophysical approaches including single channel recordings in isolated ventricular cardiomyocytes and action potential measurements in multicellular preparations as well as intact heart. A major part of the work will be devoted to characterizing the regulation (by cytoplasmic calcium and others) of cardiac connexin hemichannels and to explore the potential contribution of these channels as an arrthymogenic substrate. Significant efforts will be directed to distinguishing connexin hemichannel unitary currents in single cardiomyocytes from other classic ion channels (f.e. sodium, potassium and chloride channels).
