Summer School: Ohrid: Between East and West – Universalism verses Regionalism in Byzantine art, Ohrid, 12-16 August 2012‏

Euro-Balkan Institute for Social and Humanities Research, Skopje, Republic of Macedonia
is announcing Summer School:

“Between East and West – Universalism verses Regionalism in Byzantine art”
to be held 12th-26th August, Ohrid, Macedonia

>From Anatolia (east) to Calabria (west), Byzantium aimed the highest level of Universalism in the religious and secular
domain. Byzantine art being a manifestation of the spiritual, intellectual, social and political preoccupations, is thus profoundly universal. Nevertheless, the geographical spread of the empire with its multicultural and pluri-ethnic components imposed a regionalists and even individualist tendencies expressed through the artistic currents in both iconographic and stylistic sense. The Summer School “Between est and west – Universalism verses Regionalism in byzantine art” will explore the phenomenon of the diversity and uniformity in byzantine art through the notions of exchanges, contacts and eclecticism, especially between eastern and western aesthetics. The objective of the Summer School is to give a fresh look on the byzantine artistic heritage by using a transversal analysis of the byzantine “cosmopolite identity”. Byzantium was during centuries a hinge between est and west and the main goal of the Summer School is to comprehend to which degree byzantine art transcends the differences between this two worlds.
The Summer School is integral part of Ohrid Summer University (OSU) which is an academic program for young faculty, PhD candidates, postgraduates, researchers and professionals, which offers intensive, problem oriented and research based courses from the domain of social sciences and humanities.
