İstanbul ŞEHİR University is pleased to announce the call for applications for the Interdisciplinary Master’s Program in Modern Turkish Studies.

The M.A. Program on Modern Turkish Studies is led by the Center for Modern Turkish Studies within the Graduate School of Humanities and Social Sciences. The Centre for Modern Turkish Studies is not only coordinating the Master’s Program, but also hosts regular public lectures, events, workshops, conferences and conducts research on issues and problems of Modern Turkey.

Modern Turkish Studies Graduate Program is supported by a distinguished core faculty with well-known research achievements on Turkey, provides a high level of study area relating to modern Turkey in several fields of social sciences by comparative and interdisciplinary perspectives, theories and methods.

The MTS Master’s program aims at attracting ambitious and curious students wanting to develop analytical skills for thinking and discussing critically, and carrying out important research that contributes to the field of Turkish Studies.

This two-year MA program is supported by more than 20 full-time faculty members and instructors from Political Science, International Relations, Sociology, History, Law, Literature, Communication and Islamic Studies as well as faculty members and experts from other fields and institutions. Language of instruction is English.

Content of the Program

The MTS is a comparative and interdisciplinary program in social sciences and humanities, which enables participants to effectively understand the interrelationship between politics, history, economics and culture with an emphasis on Modern Turkey.

The interdisciplinary approach of Modern Turkish Studies program allow us to have a comprehensive understanding of the historical, sociological and global perspectives of current Turkish political context. This wider knowledge emanates from the conjunction of our fields such as Political Sciences, International Relations, History, Sociology, Nationalism Studies, Regional Analysis and Security Studies.

In the first two semesters, through compulsory courses, students are familiarized with the multidisciplinary approaches in the study of Modern Turkey, political history, political science, and economics. Elective courses are designed for specialization in the fields of problems of democracy, law and politics, religion and politics, media and politics, ethno-politics, sociology of modern Turkish society, conflict resolution, Turkish foreign policy, political economy and modern Turkish intellectual thought. In the third semester, students concentrate on how to make research and begin to design their thesis. In the final semester students write a master thesis reflecting their capacity to work on a scientific subject independently.

The program prepares students for doctoral studies and professional life in a variety of other fields including work in international, local governmental and non-governmental organizations, think-thanks, journalism, business, scientific research, and consultancy.


Most of the compulsory courses are taught by the staff affiliated with the Centre for Modern Turkish Studies – Ümit Cizre, İsmail Kara, Burhanettin Duran, Ferhat Kentel, Mesut Yeğen, Ebru Kayaalp and Abdülhamit Kırmızı. Other faculty members offering classes on Modern Turkey and/or contributing to classes in the framework of the MA Programme are Talha Köse (Political Science and International Relations), Fahrettin Altun (Cinema and TV), Eda Yücesoy (Sociology), Vügar İmanbeyli (Political Science and International Relations), Murat Güvenç (Sociology), Mesut Özcan (Center for Strategic Research), Didem Havlioğlu (Turkish Language and Literature).

Academic Degree

Students completing the Interdisciplinary Master’s Program in Modern Turkish Studies earn the degree “Master of Arts”, abbreviated MA.

The Interdisciplinary Master’s Program in Modern Turkish Studies welcomes applicants who hold an academic degree of bachelor’s degree (GPA 2,5/4 or 65/100) or equivalent who can demonstrate their basic knowledge of social sciences or humanities - political, social, international or economic sciences, cultural studies - and who have some general insight and interest in Modern Turkey.

Tuition and Scholarship
Tuition fee of the Programs for students admitted in 2014-2015 Academic Year is 18.000 TL for the entire program.
Students admitted to the programs can have full tuition waiver in return for teaching assistantship. Scholarship evaluations for the candidates are made during the acceptance of the program. In addition to tuition waiver following benefits can be provided.
· A monthly stipend ranging from 800 TL to 1200 TL (app. 270 Euro/375 US Dollar to 400 Euro/560 US Dollar) during 21 months.

The APPLICATION should consist of:

1. Completed application form

1. ALES (For Turkish citizens EA minimum 55) or GRE – Graduate Admission Exam: International candidates are required to present their latest GRE test scores. GRE – min. 145 Verbal or 149 Quantitative. The validity period for GRE score is 5 years.

3. Proof of proficiency in English language: IELTS (required minimum score: 6.5), a TOEFL (required minimum score: 213 on the computerized test, 550 on the paper based test, 80 on the internet based test). The validity period for these scores is 2 years.
ŞEHİR English Proficiency Exam: All applicants who do not submit any one of the above mentioned documents are taken to the ŞEHİR Test of English Proficiency (STEP). Applications of those who pass this exam are evaluated.

4. Statement of Purpose/ Research Proposal (English)
5. Diploma obtained at the undergraduate level (translated into English or Turkish) BA Degree (GPA 2,5/4 or 65/100) or equivalent in an appropriate subject area (Political Science, International Relations, History, Public Administration, Sociology, Law, Economics). The MTS Acceptance Committee will review applicants from different fields. In case of acceptance of those applicants and in accordance with their transcripts, students will be charged with additional course load as academic preparation for the MTS graduate program.
6. Transcript of records obtained at the undergraduate level (translated into English or Turkish)
7. Two letter of recommendation (preferably from a university professor or employer, in English)
8. Curriculum vitae (English)
9. If any, academic study samples (paper(s), BA graduation project, article etc.)
10. Passport photos (2 pieces)
11. Passport copy (For international applicants)
